2016 Will be the “Tourism Year” : Prime Minister
A two-day international conference on Buddhist heritage and tourism was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. To strengthen the tourism industry, the government has decided to celebrate the year 2016 as tourism year, she said. She spoke about various aspects of the tourism industry.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the conference at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Tuesday morning. She added that 2016 will be the Visit Bangladesh year.
The Motor Vehicle Agreement (MVA) was signed between SAARC countries, Bhutan, Nepal, India and Bangladesh (BBIN). The government hopes to develop the tourism industry in the region. This expansion is expected to increase the number of tourists traveling the region, which will lead to the expansion of business.
Sheikh Hasina mentioned that, an exclusive tourist zone is underway to be developed in Teknaf upazila in the district of Cox’s Bazar, the southernmost part of Bangladesh. Steps have been adopted to attract foreign investment. We will build a special economic zone next to it, she said.
The Prime Minister further said, the government is trying to ameliorate all the tourist attractions in the country including Cox’s Bazar, St. Martin’s Island and Kuakata. Marine Drive is progressing over 8 kilometers from Cox’s Bazar to teknaf.
The Prime Minister also said, besides the development of the tourism industry, the government is focusing on promotion and marketing of the tourism industry of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Tourism Board is working towards the aim.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism have organized this conference. The chief of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Taleb Rifai and Tourism high officials from 13 countries took part in it. Secretary-General of UNWTO, Taleb Rifai was the special guest at the opening ceremony. Including India, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar, tourism and officials from 13 countries attended.
